The best view in the city.
Back in December of 2022, I was invited to go on a hike. The Palm Desert Cross is a hiking trail well-known by many in the Valley. Mainly because of its actual large metal cross that is posted at the end of the trail. Having not been there before, I was taken aback by the striking view!
After some research, I learned that it was originally erected 41 years prior to my visit in the same month. While living in a nearby cabin Mark Stembler constructed a wooden cross with the help of Duane Zugel. On a Tripadvisor post that was made by Stembler, I was surprised to learn that he was a College of the Desert Student like me. However, in 1996, in association with St Margaret’s Church, Frank Trane was commissioned to design the replacement of the original cross. Steve Jones and Matthew Fletcher are also responsible for the creation of the 16 x 30 feet cross we see today. In addition, but not in association, a plaque was placed at the base in 2010.
I had brought my Sony ZV-1 with me as I was expecting to take some photos along the way. However, out of the handful of photos I snapped this is by far my favorite because of its layered depth and composition. It really puts into perspective the landscape of the city, its seemingly tiny homes and cars. This experience artistically took me a step back from mainly pursuing portrait photography. I would love to go back one day and capture this view at various times of the day.
